An Evening Train in Central Sri Lanka

I am alone in this journey –

surrounded by fellow passengers,

even friends going to the same destination;

and yet alone, terribly alone,

because you are not here.

Loneliness is the gift you gave me:

my beautiful, painful, profound loneliness. 

Ever since you said goodbye,

I have been alone;

in truth, ever since I knew you.

I lost everyone else when you happened.

I gained everything else when you happened.

I lost myself and found myself through you.

Tracks are full of songs,

compartments full of people,

faces full of smiles and stories.

Hills, valleys and rivers float beyond the window.

Memories and dreams rush past inside.

Towns and villages,

men, women and children pass by. 

Tunnels and nights emerge.

I hold on to your memory.

I am grateful we once shared a path.

I am content you guided me out of a tunnel – 

and into another night,

where I still carry your light.

இப்பயணத்தில் தனியனாக இருக்கிறேன் நான்;

அதே இலக்கை நோக்கிச் செல்லும் பயணிகளும்

நண்பர்களும் கூட இருப்பினும்
கடுமையான தனிமையில் உழல்கிறேன் நான்.
காரணம் நீ இங்கு இல்லை. நீ என்னிடமிருந்து விடைபெற்றுக்கொண்ட கணத்திலிருந்து

நான் தனிமையிலேயே இருக்கிறேன்;
உண்மையில் நான் உன்னைப் பார்த்த கணத்திலிருந்து.

நீ நிகழ்ந்தபொழுது ஏனைய அனைவரையும் இழந்தேன்.

நீ நிகழ்ந்தபொழுது மற்றெல்லாவற்றையும் அடைந்தேன்.
உன் மூலம் நான் என்னை இழந்து என்னைக் கண்டடைந்தேன்.
தடங்கள்தோரும் கீதங்கள்,
பெட்டிகள் நிறைய மாந்தர்கள்,
முகங்கள் நிறைய சிரிப்புடனும் கதைகளுடனும்
மலைகளும் சமவெளிகளும் ஆறுகளும் ஐன்னலுக்கு வெளியே

நீந்திக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றன.
ஓர்மைகளும் கனவுகளும் விரைந்து பாய்கின்றன அகத்தில்.
நகரங்கள், கிராமங்கள், ஆண்கள், பெண்கள், குழந்தைகள்

கடந்துசெல்கின்றனர்.
சுரங்கங்களும் இரவுகளும் எழுந்து பரவுகின்றன.
நான் உன்னுடைய நினைவையே பற்றிக்கொண்டேன்.
ஒரு காலத்தில் நமது பாதைகள் சந்தித்ததுக் கொண்டதற்காக

நான் நன்றியுணர்வால் நிறைகிறேன்.
நீ என்னை ஒரு சுரங்கத்திலிருந்து வெளிப்படுத்தி
உனது ஒளியை நான் இன்னும்

ஏந்திக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு இருளுக்குள் என்னை

மூழ்கடித்ததைக் கொண்டு

நான் திருப்தியுறுகிறேன்.
