Lazzate Gham Badha Dijiye | Malayalam
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Aap phir mushkura dijiye
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Mera daaman bahot saaf hain
Koi tohmat laga dijiye
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Kimat e dil bata dijiye
Khaaq lekar udda dijiye
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Chand kab tak gahan mei rahe
Aap zulfe hata dijiye
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Aap andhere mein kab taq rahe
Phir koi ghar jala dijiye
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Ek samundar ne aawaz di
Mujhko paani peela dijiye
Lazzate ghum badha dijiye
Lyrics: Raaz Alahabadi
(This is an occasional translation series of Urdu poems, ghazals, nazms, qawalis etc that are close to my heart; inspired by a good friend asking for the meaning of certain ghazals. While going through these lyrics and soulful rendering – there are multiple versions by different singers – I am repeatedly reminded of the fact that poetry is quintessentially untranslatable; and the sweetness of Urdu alfaaz, beautiful ambiguity of certain words and phrases, alongside the depth of jazbaat they carry – all these make the task harder and more troublesome. As Malayalam language doesn’t have many attempts of Urdu poems being rendered into the language, except for a couple of books of popular Ghazals in Malayalam, I do hope more authentic and scholarly projects come up in future.)
