നിന്റെ പേര് കേൾക്കുമ്പോഴേ ഇന്ന് വല്ലാതെ കരഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു…
സായാഹ്നമോരോന്നും പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെയാണ് പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്,
ഇന്നെന്തോ മാറ്റമുണ്ട്,
വൈകുന്നേരമായതോടെ ഞാൻ കരഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു…

ഇടക്ക് വിധിയെച്ചൊല്ലിയുള്ള വിലാപം,
ഇടക്ക് ദുനിയാവിനെപ്പറ്റി പരിഭവം,
പ്രണയലക്ഷ്യത്തിന്റെ പാതയിൽ
ഓരോ കാലടിവെക്കുമ്പോഴും ഞാൻ കരഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു…

സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ പേര്
ലോകത്താരുച്ചരിച്ചാലും ‘ഷകീൽ’,
ഹൃദയത്തിന്റെ തോൽവികളെ ഓർത്തു ഞാൻ കരഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു…

ऐ मोहब्बत तेरे अंजाम पे रोना आया
जाने क्यों आज तेरे नाम पे रोना आया
यूँ तो हर शाम उम्मीदों में गुज़र जाती थी
आज कुछ बात है जो शाम पे रोना आया
कभी तक़्दीर का मातम कभी दुनिया का गिला
मंज़िल-ए-इश्क़ में हर गाम पे रोना आया
जब हुआ ज़िक्र ज़माने में मोहब्बत का ‘शकील’
मुझ को अपने दिल-ए-नाकाम पे रोना आया
(This is an occasional translation series of Urdu poems, ghazals, nazms, qawalis etc that are close to my heart. While going through these lyrics and soulful rendering – there are multiple versions by different singers – I am repeatedly reminded of the fact that poetry is quintessentially untranslatable; and the sweetness of Urdu alfaaz, beautiful ambiguity of certain words and phrases, alongside the depth of jazbaat they carry – all these make the task harder and more troublesome. As Malayalam language doesn’t have many attempts of Urdu poems being rendered into the language, except for a couple of books of popular Ghazals in Malayalam, I do hope more authentic and scholarly projects come up in future.)
