Apni aankhon ke samundar mein utar jaane de
tera mujrim hun mujhe doob ke mar jane de..
Aye naye dost na samjhunga tujhe bhi apna
pehle maazi ka koi zakhm to bhar jaane de
Aag duniya ki lagayee hui bujh jayegi
koi aansoon mere daaman pe bikhar jaane de
Zakhm kitne teri chahat se mile hain mujhko
sochta hun ke kahun tujh se magar jaane de.

अपनी आँखों के समंदर में उतर जाने दे।
तेरा मुजरिम हूँ मुझे डूब के मर जाने दे।
ऐ नए दोस्त मैं समझूँगा तुझे भी अपना
पहले माज़ी का कोई ज़ख़्म तो भर जाने दे।
आग दुनिया की लगाई हुई बुझ जाएगी
कोई आँसू मेरे दामन पर बिखर जाने दे।
ज़ख़्म कितने तेरी चाहत से मिले हैं मुझको
सोचता हूँ कि कहूँ तुझसे मगर जाने दे।
(This is an occasional translation series of Urdu poems, ghazals, nazms, qawalis etc that are close to my heart; inspired by a good friend asking for the meaning of certain ghazals. While going through these lyrics and soulful rendering – there are multiple versions by different singers – I am repeatedly reminded of the fact that poetry is quintessentially untranslatable; and the sweetness of Urdu alfaaz, beautiful ambiguity of certain words and phrases, alongside the depth of jazbaat they carry – all these make the task harder and more troublesome. As Malayalam language doesn’t have many attempts of Urdu poems being rendered into the language, except for a couple of books of popular Ghazals in Malayalam, I do hope more authentic and scholarly projects come up in future.)
